United Way of El Paso County acquires Flying Horse Half Marathon, 10k & 5k from Race El Paso

Race to continue under new ownership

EL PASO, TX – United Way of El Paso County announces the acquisition of Flying Horse Half Marathon, 10k & 5k from Race El Paso. The run takes place at Sunland Racetrack and Casino each November.  First introduced in 2011, Flying Horse Half Marathon, 10k & 5k takes runners around the racetrack, through Sunland Park, and into the Upper Valley area of El Paso.  The race raises money for local nonprofit organizations, and it offers the Workplace Race, a team challenge for employee groups.

“Flying Horse offers us a great way for us to connect with the community and make a positive impact.  We’re excited,” says Georgina Hernández, President and CEO of United Way of El Paso County.  “The race fits perfectly with our mission and goal to promote giving, volunteerism, and community engagement.”

This change marks a new era for Flying Horse Half Marathon, 10k & 5k, which will be produced by United Way of El Paso County going forward.  “United Way is a natural fit for Flying Horse.  For years, it’s inspired charitable giving and offered a fun way to connect with co-workers and runners throughout El Paso and Southern New Mexico,” says founder and President of Race El Paso, Gabriela Gallegos.

Race El Paso developed the event in 2011 to fill a need for high-quality endurance events in the Paso del Norte area. Visiting runners have enjoyed running in two states, and race elements inspired by the racetrack and horseracing have made the event a favorite for local runners. Runners can expect the same top-notch organization they’ve come to expect at Flying Horse Half Marathon, 10k & 5k. The City of Sunland Park’s continuing commitment to the event and United Way’s extensive history of serving the El Paso area combine to ensure continuity and quality as the event moves forward.

Flying Horse Half Marathon, 10k & 5k will take place on November 16, 2024, at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.  The race offers three distance options for runners and walkers: half marathon (13.1 miles), 10k (6.2 miles), and 5k (3.1 miles).  The event offers team categories and a chance to fundraise for area nonprofit organizations.  Online registration will open on July 22 at www.unitedwayelpaso.org/flying-horse.  Area nonprofits are invited to contact Mary Aikman to apply to be a nonprofit beneficiary and partner for the 2024 race.
